Most managers and executives face this challenge of making stakeholders listen and accept their ideas. The challenge may vary from role to role and complexity may vary at different levels but end of the day everyone is trying to persuade their ideas / concepts etc to someone. There could be different strategies that work with different people, processes etc. However what I feel bad about is that we sometimes we change our goggles color RED. Everything remains the same but our perspective towards things change to unrealistic pessimistic. But, Just by changing the lens to color: GREEN our world can change. By Green lens, I do not mean to look positive, what I mean is to see the real thing i.e. As-it-is.
With a good perspective of reality, we should continuously enhance our strategies and toolkit (e.g. linking ideas to something important e.g revenue, measuring the right metric, demonstrating, piloting, communicating etc) to make people accept our ideas.
Next, is to realize that it is a complex world and perspectives may vary from person to person. The same thing can be seen in many different ways and therefore it may need time & patience.
However, If you have a bigger purpose backing your ideas – such struggles will always look smaller. Try looking at problems as opportunities to learn. Maybe it will help later on.
As Steve jobs said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”
