Creative Problem Solving

Reframing – Key to creative problem solving

In this video, I talk about a simple tool called – “re-framing”. This is the heart of any problem-solving effort and can give significantly frugal results reducing the impact of the problem that team is trying to solve.

More than 20 years after the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, cleanup teams operating in subarctic waters struggled to pump out the oil. The problem was solved by an oil industry outsider who used his expertise in the concrete industry to come up with the winning solution. Find several more here

Watch out how anemia problem was solved using the iron fish than traditional medicines. The problem was thought of as a way to introduce iron into a daily lifestyle rather than thinking of how to make medicine available or how to induce discipline of taking medicine.

Notice how Decathlon solves the problem of increasing sales by reframing. They reframed the “Sales problem” to the “Buyer’s decision-making problem”. They organize the products as per the frequency of use – 2 times a week, daily, etc. making it super easy for everyone to buy.

Similar to Decathlon, this wine shop in New York (BottleRocket) has wines arranged as per the occasion and food. Makes consumers decision making simple and smooth

Please do comment below if the technique is helpful. Also please share case studies how reframed problem statement helped a business get the creative solution.
